Time to Go Big on Affordable Housing

Published by Quinte News – February 27, 2023

Hastings County CAO Jim Pine, County Warden Bob Mullin, and members of the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC) are launching a “7 in 7” plan to construct 7,000 affordable rental units across Eastern Ontario in seven years. The plan aims to address the growing wait list for affordable or social housing in Eastern Ontario, which currently has around 14,000 people on the list.

The EOWC estimates that the cost of building 7,000 units would be $3.1 billion, with $813 million allocated to Hastings, Lennox and Addington, and Prince Edward counties for the construction of just over 1,800 units over the seven-year period. The EOWC has enlisted the services of KWM to prepare a detailed business case for the plan, with a pilot project expected to begin in the fall of this year.
