EOWC Resolution 2026-04: Request for Urgent Provincial Action on the Accuracy of Municipal Voters’ Lists

Voter Infromation

Voters can visit registertovote.on.ca to check or update their voter registration until August 12. All eligible electors including non-resident voters (i.e. owners, tenants, and their spouses) will be able to register subject to showing proof of identify and property eligibility.

After August 12, Elections Ontario will provide the preliminary voters list to municipal clerks who continue to have the ability to add, remove, and update the list to ensure all eligible electors are registered. Anybody who misses the deadline to update their information with Elections Ontario can contact their municipal clerk directly to register to vote.

AMO’s Healthy Democracy Project is working in partnership with the Toronto Metropolitan University on sessions and tools to support municipalities in strategies on voter engagement. AMO has launched our province wide campaign encouraging the importance of voting in the municipal election. This work is supported by a number of resources found on their website.

EOWC Resolution 2026-04: Request for Urgent Provincial Action on the Accuracy of Municipal Voters’ Lists

Date: July 17, 2026

Moved by: Warden Corinna Smith-Gatcke, United Counties of Leeds and Grenville

Seconded by: Warden Mario Zanth, United Counties of Prescott and Russell

WHEREAS the Province of Ontario shifted responsibility of the municipal election voters list from Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) to Elections Ontario by amending the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, through the Helping Tenants and Small Businesses Act, 2020, effective after the 2022 municipal election; and

WHEREAS municipalities in eastern Ontario presented by Elections Ontario have had discrepancies in voter counts from the 2022 municipal election, specifically in the number of eligible non-resident property owners which are significantly lower than the 2022 numbers; and

WHEREAS Elections Ontario has acknowledged the discrepancies and is planning to address them;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus urges the Ontario Government to immediately encourage prioritization of the review of data specifically related to non-resident property owners to ensure voter lists are as accurate as possible prior to August 14, 2026; and

THAT this resolution be forwarded to the Premier of Ontario, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the eastern Ontario Members of Provincial Parliament, AMO, ROMA, AMCTO, FOCA, WOWC, OBCM, NOMA, and FONOM.
